Gym workout app: today's session, no thinking required

A good gym workout app tells you what is on today, lets you log each set in seconds and alerts you when your rest is over. Elvyfit is built to be used with your phone in your hand between sets: open it, log, and keep lifting.

See pricing The app itself is in Spanish for now.

Before you walk in: today's session

When you open the app you see today's session with its exercises, sets and reference weights. You do not have to remember which day was legs or what weight you used last time. On iPhone and Android there is a widget showing today's session, the calories you have left and your streak.

If you train at a specific gym, you can create a gym profile with the plates available and the weight steps of the machines. The app rounds loads to what you can really load. The session comes from your personalized gym routine.

Logging sets fast on the gym floor

Logging takes just a few taps. You enter weight and reps, and everything else is optional. Each set is colored against your previous session: more weight or reps, fewer, or the same. That way you can tell at a glance whether you are progressing. The full detail of logging is on the workout tracker app page.

  • Weight and reps

The essentials of every set, with the value from your previous session in view.

  • Optional RIR

Reps in reserve: 0, 1, 2 or 3 or more. If you are not sure what that means, read what RIR is in training.

  • Set types

Normal, warm up, top set, back off, third set, drop set and to failure. Warm ups do not count toward progression, ranks or records.

  • Note per exercise

Jot down your seat setting, how it felt, or anything you want to remember next time.

Rest between sets, with an alert

Between sets the app suggests a rest based on the exercise: 150 to 180 seconds on compound lifts, 120 on adduction, abduction and calf work, and 90 to 150 on abs. You can adjust it. If you want to know why some exercises deserve longer rests than others, read the article on how long to rest between sets.

When time is up you get an alert, with an optional system voice. On iPhone there is a Live Activity on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island with +15 s and Skip buttons, on iOS 17 or later. On Android you get a notification with a countdown.

The Live Activity needs iOS 16.2 or later, and the Dynamic Island needs iOS 17 or later on a compatible iPhone.

A guide to each exercise, and to aches

If you are unsure about a machine or a movement, open the exercise guide. The library has 164 exercises, and 91 of them include a looping animation. The rest show a poster image. The animations are labeled as AI generated illustrations.

  • Cues and mistakes

Every exercise comes with how to perform it, the typical mistakes and alternatives.

  • Machine taken

You can swap an exercise for another variant: there are 5 or more for each slot in your routine.

  • Aches and pains

A map of 8 zones: neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, lower back, hip, knee and ankle. A mild ache lowers the load by 15%, a moderate one suggests a variant and a strong one excludes the exercise temporarily.

  • You approve

Before your plan changes because of an ache, the app proposes the change and you decide.

How progression really works

The app reads your last top set. If you did 9 or more reps, it suggests adding weight: 2.5 kg on upper body and barbell lifts, 5 kg on legs. If not, it suggests one more rep, or two if you are a beginner. That is a code rule, not an AI opinion, and it never lowers your load on its own. If you stall, it suggests an optional deload week.

From your sets it calculates an estimated one rep max using the Epley formula, with reps capped at 12, and your strength ranks come from there. It is an estimate, not a max out test. For the general idea, see the article on progressive overload.

Honest limits inside the gym

If your gym has no signal, your workout logs and manually entered meals are saved on your phone and sync when the connection returns. But the chat with Elvy, the rankings, and meal photos or voice do need a connection. Do not count on everything working the same without a signal.

The app does not correct your form live. On Plus you can upload a clip of up to 45 seconds to be analyzed afterward. And although the animation helps, it does not replace a qualified person watching you if you are unsure about a movement or you feel pain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gym workout app?

It depends on how you train. If you want a session ready every day, fast set logging, comparison with your last workout and a timer with an alert, Elvyfit covers that. Check whether an app suggests your load progression or just leaves you with a digital notebook.

Is the gym workout app free?

Full workout logging, with overload, ranks, a timer and the routine editor, is on the Free plan. Plus adds things like recovery and volume maps and video form analysis. Plus costs €19.99 per month or €199.99 per year, with a 7 day trial and no card needed.

What happens if I have no signal at the gym?

What you log for workouts and manual meals is saved on your phone and syncs when the connection returns. The exercise catalog lives inside the app. The chat with Elvy, the rankings, and meal photos or voice need a connection.

Can I bring my history from another app?

Yes, from a Hevy or Strong CSV file. The app detects the format, converts pounds to kilos and imports anything it does not recognize as a custom exercise. You can import 10 per day. You can also export your data from the app itself.

Does the timer work with the screen locked?

On iPhone you will see the rest on the lock screen with a Live Activity, and in the Dynamic Island on iOS 17 or later. On Android you get a notification with a countdown. In both cases the app alerts you when time is up.

What workout data does the app store?

Your sets, weights, reps and notes, on servers in the EU and tied to your account. You can export everything as JSON and delete your account from the app. Keep in mind that the app is in Spanish only for now and that you must be 18 or older.

Is the app available in English?

Not yet. The app is in Spanish only (Spain) for now. Exercise names and cues are in Spanish too, even if your phone is set to English, but the animations help you follow each movement.
