AI personal trainer: what it can do and what it can't

An AI personal trainer is an assistant that answers questions, explains things and adjusts your plan at any hour. It is not a person, it cannot watch you train and it does not replace a healthcare professional. Elvy, the assistant in Elvyfit, does the first part carefully and is upfront about the second.

Illustrative example

What an AI personal trainer is

An AI personal trainer is a conversational assistant that knows your training and nutrition data and uses it to answer you. You can ask why an exercise is in your workout, how to rearrange your week when you travel, or what to do about a sore shoulder, and you get an answer in seconds.

Elvy always presents itself as AI, with a visible label in the chat, and never pretends to be a person. For the bigger picture of the technology behind the app, read the guide to the AI fitness app.

What Elvy can do for you

Elvy works with concrete tools, not just text. That lets it act on the app based on what you ask, instead of only giving opinions.

  • Meals

Logs what you ate, edits your last entry, builds a meal plan and suggests a macro reserve or a free meal.

  • Workouts

Generates and edits routines, suggests exercise swaps, offers light plans and reschedules your week when it gets messy.

  • Progress

Looks up your progress, logs your weight and any discomfort, starts a check in and shows your workout, an exercise or the muscle map.

  • Context

Turns on travel mode and pauses. It remembers a short summary and up to 20 brief facts that you can see and delete in Settings.

What it cannot do compared with a person

A good human coach sees how you move, notices when you are tired and adjusts on the spot. Elvy cannot do that, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. This table puts each task side by side.

How it supports you day to day

Typical use is short and practical. Elvy is not meant to be your daily conversation. It is there to settle questions and save you steps.

  1. You ask

You type something in the chat like “I have no time today” or “my knee hurts when I squat”.

  2. Elvy suggests

It answers and, when it makes sense, prepares a change on a card with the new routine, meal or rescheduled week.

  3. You decide

You apply the suggestion or dismiss it. Changes to your routine, meals and week are applied by you from the card, although Elvy does log a meal when you ask and generates your first routine if you ask in the chat.

  4. It nudges without nagging

Alerts for absences, reminders, the weekly report and streak protection are on by default and respect your quiet hours, pauses and trips.

How it really works: the safeguards

Before any message reaches the model, a detector based on rules and text patterns looks for signs of crisis, eating disorders, extreme dieting or compulsive exercise. If it recognizes one, the AI does not answer: a fixed text with help resources appears instead. It is code, not a model, so it may miss unusual wording, and it does not replace professional help.

The arguments of each tool are validated and limited in code, and calorie floors are enforced by the code, not the model. There is one honest nuance: the first workout you request in the chat is generated and saved right away. For a workout that skips the chat, read how the personalized gym routines are built.

Consent to use AI is optional and starts unchecked. The chat and the meal analysis need it, while the body analysis and the video technique analysis ask for their own specific consent before sending anything. You can withdraw it any time in Settings, under Privacy.

Honest limits you should know about

Elvy can be wrong. If something does not match how you feel, trust your body and your own professional. Elvyfit is not a medical device: if you have injuries or medical conditions, you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have had an eating disorder, talk to a healthcare professional first.

There are practical limits too. The chat needs a connection, you must be 18 or older, and the app is in Spanish only for now. To see each tool in more detail, visit the page about Elvy, the AI fitness assistant.

Elvy supports your training, but it does not replace the judgment of a coach, a physical therapist or a registered dietitian.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI personal trainer replace a human one?

Not fully. Elvy answers questions, suggests changes and keeps you company at any hour, but it cannot watch you train, correct your form live or diagnose anything. If you want in person supervision or you are dealing with an injury, a professional is still the better choice.

Is Elvy a real person?

No. Elvy is an artificial intelligence assistant and says so every time: the chat carries an “AI” label and it introduces itself as not human. No person answers for Elvy: the answers are generated by the AI.

How much does it cost, and is there a free plan?

The Free plan includes 5 messages a month with Elvy. Plus raises that to 200 messages and costs €19.99 per month or €199.99 per year, with a 7 day trial and no card needed. You subscribe inside the app through the App Store or Google Play, and the store shows the final price.

What does Elvy do with my data?

If you give consent, which is optional, it sends your messages to a model in European regions, without your name, email or identifiers. Your data is not used to train third party models. Elvy's memory is short, you can see and delete it in Settings, and it does not store mental health details or data about other people.

Can it correct my form?

Only after your workout, and only on Plus. You upload a clip of up to 45 seconds, with 6 analyses a month, and the app flags mistakes by phase with the exact second. The video is deleted after the analysis. It is no substitute for someone watching you in person.

What happens if I write something worrying?

A detector based on rules and text patterns, which is code and not a model, intercepts messages where it recognizes crisis, eating disorders, extreme diets or compulsive exercise and replies with a fixed text with resources. It may miss unusual wording and does not replace professional help. Elvyfit is not an emergency service: if you are in danger, call your local emergency number.

Is the app available in English?

Not at the moment. The app is in Spanish only (Spain) for now, and that includes Elvy's replies, even if your phone is set to English.
