AI fitness app: where the AI steps in and where it doesn't
An AI fitness app uses artificial intelligence for specific jobs, like chatting with you, reading a photo of your meal or checking a video of your lifting form. In Elvyfit the AI does not build your workout or your meal plan: fixed rules written in code do that. Here is a clear map of every piece, plus a short guide to choosing well.
What an AI fitness app actually is
An AI fitness app is a training and nutrition app that adds language or vision models to some of its features. What the “AI powered” badge rarely tells you is which part of your plan depends on the model and which part does not.
That difference matters. A language model is great at conversation, but it can get things wrong. For calories, set counts and load progression you want something more predictable. That is why Elvyfit keeps the two layers apart, as the page on what an AI personal trainer can and cannot do explains in more detail.
How it really works: code on one side, AI on the other
Elvyfit draws an explicit line. Code, with written rules you can inspect, builds the workout and the meal plan, enforces the calorie floors and decides when to raise your weights. The AI is used to understand what you tell it and to estimate things a formula cannot calculate, like the foods on a photo of your plate.
-
Code decides
Your workout and weekly split, the meal plan built from templates, calories and macros, safety minimums, progressive overload, strength ranks and the weekly plan adjustment.
-
AI does
The chat with Elvy, meal estimates from a photo, text or voice, video form analysis, posture analysis and the monthly and yearly recaps.
-
Code checks the AI
When Elvy uses a tool, the code validates and limits its arguments. Changes to your workout, meals and week arrive as a card, and you apply them. Elvy does log a meal when you ask, and it generates your first routine if you ask in the chat.
-
You decide
You can use the app without agreeing to AI. The chat and the meal analysis need your AI consent, and the body analysis and the video technique analysis ask for their own specific consent before sending anything. You can withdraw it any time in Settings, under Privacy.
Where the AI steps in, feature by feature
The table shows who decides each feature and the monthly allowance on each plan. For the details of the diet, see how the AI nutrition plan is calculated, and for meal photos, the page on the photo calorie counter.
| Feature | Who decides | Free | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workout and weekly split | Code | Included | Included |
| Meal plan and calories | Code | 1 option per meal | 5 variants per meal |
| Chat with Elvy | AI | 5 messages | 200 messages |
| Meals typed in | AI | 3 | 60 |
| Meal photo | AI | Not included | 60 |
| Posture analysis | AI | 1 | 4 |
| Video form analysis | AI | Not included | 6 |
| Weekly plan adjustment | Code | 2 reports with adjustment | Unlimited |
How to choose an AI fitness app
Before you install anything, run five quick checks. They work for any app, not only ours.
-
Ask what the AI decides
If an app does not explain what the model does and what the code does, be careful.
-
Look for labels and consent
The chat should identify itself as AI and ask your permission before sending your data. In Elvyfit consent is optional and starts unchecked.
-
See how it handles estimates
A meal photo cannot measure anything. An app that shows a range and lets you correct it beats one that gives you a falsely exact number.
-
Check the privacy basics
Make sure you can export your data and delete your account from inside the app. Ours is stored on servers in the EU.
-
Understand the price
See what the free plan includes before you start a trial. Prices are on the page about plans and pricing.
Honest limits of AI in a fitness app
AI estimates, it does not measure. A photo of a plate returns a calorie range with a margin of 8% to 40% depending on confidence, and you can correct it before saving. The body analysis looks at posture and muscle imbalances from front and side photos, but it does not measure your body fat.
Elvyfit is not a medical device and does not replace a doctor, a physical therapist or a registered dietitian. If you have an injury or a medical condition, you are pregnant, or you have had an eating disorder, talk to a healthcare professional first. On top of that, a detector based on rules and text patterns intercepts messages where it recognizes crisis, extreme dieting or compulsive exercise, and answers with fixed text and help resources. It may miss unusual wording and does not replace professional help.
A few practical limits too: the app is in Spanish only for now, the chat with Elvy needs a connection, and you have to be 18 or older.
More detail on the page about how Elvyfit uses AI. The legal texts are still waiting for a legal check.
Privacy, data and plans
The context sent to the AI carries no name, email or identifier. Your data is not used to train third party models, and you can export everything as JSON and delete your account from the app.
The Free plan includes your workout, the basic meal plan and full workout and meal logging. Plus costs €19.99 per month or €199.99 per year, with a 7 day trial and no card needed, and you buy it inside the app through the App Store or Google Play. Frequently asked questions
What is an AI fitness app?
It is a training and nutrition app that uses artificial intelligence for some features, such as chat, reading meal photos or analyzing video. What matters is knowing which parts the AI decides and which parts follow coded rules. In Elvyfit, code generates the workout and the meal plan.
Does AI generate my Elvyfit workout?
No. The workout from your questionnaire is generated by code, using rules for volume, weekly split and rest, based on your level, your equipment and your time. Elvy can help you ask for your first routine in the chat or suggest changes, but its tools are validated and limited by the code, and changes to your routine, food and week are proposed on a card that you apply.
Is there a free AI fitness app?
Elvyfit has a Free plan with a workout, a basic meal plan, workout and meal logging, and 5 messages a month with Elvy. Plus adds meal photos and bigger allowances, costs €19.99 per month or €199.99 per year, and starts with a 7 day trial with no card.
What data does the AI receive?
Only if you give consent, which is optional and starts unchecked. The chat and the meal analysis need your AI consent, while the body analysis and the video form analysis ask for their own specific consent before sending anything. The context does not include your name, email or identifiers. Your messages travel to the model and, when you use them, so do meal photos, form videos and posture photos, all processed in European regions. You can withdraw permission in Settings.
Can the AI get calories wrong?
Yes. A meal photo is an estimate and appears as a range, with a margin that depends on how confident the app is about each food. You can correct it before saving. The calories in your plan do not come from AI: code calculates them with the Mifflin St Jeor formula and safety minimums.
Is the app available in English?
Not yet. For now the app is in Spanish only (Spain), even if your phone is set to another language. This website is in English so you can see how everything works before you decide.
