Photo calorie counter: an estimate you get to correct
A photo calorie counter estimates what is on your plate from a picture. In Elvyfit it is a Plus feature, with up to 60 photos a month and 7 days of trial, and it always gives you a range instead of an exact number, because a photo cannot measure a plate.
What a photo calorie counter does
You take a picture of your meal and the app returns a list of foods, each one with its grams, calories and macros. It also shows how confident it is about each food, plus fiber, sugar, sodium and the hidden foods you cannot see, like the oil used for cooking.
It is a quick way to start a log when you do not feel like searching each ingredient one by one. But it helps to understand what it is: an estimate made by an AI, not a measurement. That is why you see a range and not a closed number.
How it really works: from plate to food log
The AI does the image analysis. What happens before and after, and what gets saved, is designed so that you have the final say.
-
You take the photo
Use the camera or pick one from your gallery. You can set your plate size to 20, 26 or 30 cm, so the scale of the portions is more realistic.
-
The AI identifies and estimates
It detects the foods on the plate and calculates grams, calories and macros for each one, with a confidence level per food.
-
You see a range
The range goes from plus or minus 8% up to 40%, depending on confidence. The clearer the food, the narrower the range.
-
You correct before saving
If it does not recognize a food, you pick the right one or mark it as low confidence. You can also change the grams.
-
It gets logged
To avoid undercounting, the app logs a figure slightly above the central estimate in your diary and in the calorie ring and macros.
Why it is an estimate and what makes it worse
No photo can see the oil in a pan or how much a stew weighs. These are the cases that affect it most, and what you can do in each one.
| Factor | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Oil and sauces | They are hard to see in the image, so the AI treats them as hidden foods | Check the entry and correct it if you used more or less |
| Plate size | It changes the scale of the portions | Set it to 20, 26 or 30 cm |
| Stews and mixed dishes | The ingredients are hard to separate | Pick the food or mark it as low confidence |
| Exact grams | They are a visual estimate | If you need precision, weigh at home |
When another way of logging beats the photo
The photo is not the only way in, and sometimes it is not the most reliable one. The meal and macro tracking has other routes, and several of them are on the Free plan.
-
Text
You type what you ate and the AI breaks it down. You get 3 a month on Free and 60 on Plus.
-
Voice
You say it out loud, it is transcribed on your phone and analyzed as text. That is 3 a month on Free and 80 on Plus.
-
Label
The scanner reads the label on your phone and the image is not saved. If it cannot read it, you can choose to send it to the AI: 3 a month on Free and 40 on Plus.
-
Barcode
It shows the Elvyfit Score from 0 to 100 and checks the product against your allergies.
What each plan includes
The food photo is a Plus feature only: up to 60 a month. On the Free plan it is locked. Plus costs €19.99 a month or €199.99 a year and starts with 7 days of trial without a card, once per person. During the trial you get 10 photos. When it ends you move to Free and nothing is deleted.
A photo needs a network connection to be analyzed. If there is none when you take it, it waits and stays pending until it can be processed.
Privacy and limits you should know about
To analyze the photo, the image travels to the AI servers, in European regions required by the server. The context that goes with it carries no name, no email and no identifier, and your data is not used to train third party models. The AI consent is optional and can be withdrawn in Settings, Privacy.
This feature is not a medical product and not medical advice. Counting calories in detail does not suit everyone. If food makes you anxious or you have had an eating disorder, talk to a health professional. In the chat, a detector based on rules and text patterns intercepts those topics when it recognizes them and answers with a fixed text and help resources, though it may miss unusual wording.
To decide how many calories are right for you, see how the AI nutrition plan is made. If your goal is to lose fat, the fat loss app page explains the approach.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a photo calorie counter?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. Elvyfit says so by showing a range from plus or minus 8% to 40%, depending on how confident it is about each food. Oil, sauces and stews are the hardest things to see, so check the entry before you save.
How many food photos can I take per month?
With Plus, up to 60 a month. The Free plan does not include the food photo. The 7 day Plus trial comes with 10 photos while it lasts, and afterward you move to Free without losing your history.
What happens if the AI does not recognize a food?
You have to pick the right food from the list or mark it as low confidence. You can also correct the grams before saving, so the final entry is your decision and not the AI's.
Can I count calories without taking a photo?
Yes. You can type the meal, say it by voice, scan a label or a barcode, or look it up in the catalog. Text and voice have a monthly limit on Free, while the label scanner and the barcode are included.
Where is my photo sent and who sees it?
The image goes to AI servers in European regions to be analyzed, without your name or email. It is not used to train third party models. The AI consent is optional, and you can withdraw it or delete your account and data from the app.
Is the app available in English?
Not yet. The app is only in Spanish from Spain for now, so foods and results appear in Spanish even if your phone is set to another language. This website is available in English so you can read how the photo counter works first.
